I landed the role of “art auction project coordinator” for Ben’s Kindergarten class for the same reason I ended up as his homeroom mom: no one else wanted the job. Although I am the least crafty person I know, I decided to take on the project because I couldn’t possibly say no to his sweet teacher when she asked.

Essentially, each class creates an art project to be auctioned off at the annual Art Auction in order to raise money for the school.

I wanted to involve the class in a project that was fairly simple (twenty kindergartners are hard enough to corral without added elements of paint and glue), so I decided on a plank American flag with the red stripe created by kiddos hand prints. Easy enough. Especially considering the fact that Dave helped with the bulk of the work. 🙂

It turned out so cute – now I want to be the one to buy it at the auction. Dave is THRILLED!

Here’s how we did it…

Dave glued plank boards together (we made two… the one on the right is one we created for the boys’ room, I’ll share about that in another post) and added wire hardware on the back for hanging (not pictured):

Painted the entire board white, then blocked off a square in the upper left corner to be painted blue:

We cut a kitchen sponge in the shape of a star in order to add the stars. Then, we taped off every other line in order to create a space for the kiddo handprints:

I brought the board to school and had each of the kids place their red handprint horizontally:

We quickly realized the paint dripped and moved the board to the floor for the remainder of handprints:

After the paint dried and we removed the tape, Dave sanded it slightly to create a distressed look:

And I finished with a coat of whitewash wax:

Ta-da!
